New Year…new menu!

Well, it’s that time of the year again and I have succumbed and set myself a New Year’s resolution.  I have already been told I am setting myself up for a fail and any time of the year is good to set a new goal, but a new year seems to scream ‘new start’ so here I am, making a new start.


It’s been weighing on me for a long time now that I am spouting a lot lately about animal kindness and also about zero waste, but I am literally ignoring the elephant in the room.  I eat meat.  By choosing not to eat meat, not only am I practising what I preach about how we should be treating animals, but I am also massively reducing my impact on our one and only planet!  Bam…killing two birds with one stone…actually no, the whole point is to not kill animals, but you get what I mean!


I spent a fair chunk of the day reading a fabulous vegetarian blog with amazing looking recipes, but I am visiting with family and won’t probably try some of these out until I get home in 8 days time.  In the meantime, I’ll have to learn to think on my feet!

So, it’s day one and how have I fared?  Well, it’s actually been more difficult than I thought this early in and I anticipate lots more difficult and awkward days, until I become completely confident with my choice.  I guess that’s why it’s called a ‘resolution’, it requires some resolve to get there.

Why was it difficult today?  Well, the family decided they wanted fish and chips for dinner, being the first day of the year and no one felt like cooking.  I thought that would be easy but of course being a public holiday only one fish and chip shop in the near vicinity was open and it had to be the least  vegetarian-friendly of all.  No vegetarian spring rolls, no banana or pineapple fritters, I couldn’t even blag a vegetarian souvlaki like any good takeaway, so I had to resort to trying a ‘corn jack’.  So my very first vegetarian dinner consisted of chips, potato scallops, a ‘corn jack’ (won’t be going there again) and two pieces of real corn cooked on the stove.  I felt very full and satisfied and hence made it through the day without eating meat and certainly not craving meat, so I consider it a success!

  1. I recently became a vegetarian (2 weeks ago) and like you I’ve felt cravings along the way. Something that has helped me out is cooking the food myself. I don’t know how to explain but I feel proud of myself when I cook a healthy vegetarian meal. YouTube has tons of recipe videos etc. Good luck!

      Yes, we’re away visiting with family until the 9th of January. I can’t wait to get home, back in my own kitchen and start cooking some awesome meals. It’s a bit hard right now!
